We tend to live three seperate lives. We have our public life, where we interact with other people at work, in the community and social events. We have our private life, when we're away from the public, spending time alone of with friends and family. But your most significant life is the one only you and the person in the mirror knows. Self awareness, conscience, independent will, imagination. It is at those moments of introspection that we come to truly know who we are.

We often get into ruts, caught up in habits and patterns that are not useful. We keep doing the same things, fighting the same alligators, struggling with the same weaknesses, repeating the same mistakes. I have been down that route. We don't stop to ask ourselves: what can I learn from last year that will keep me from essentially repeating errors of the past.
The value of the past is not limited to what we do in it but also in what we learn and have become as a result. I suppose that is why self-evaluation is always an important thing. "What I like about experiences" wrote C.S. Lewis "is that it is such an honest thing ... you may deceive yourself, but expreience is not trying to deceive you".

We plan, schedule and manage our day to day activities. Hopefully, we take things one step at a time and try not to let anything fall through the cracks. It would be great to be in total "control" of our lives but the fact is, We are not in control .... Principles are.
Of course, we can control our choices, but we can't control the consequences of those choices. Controlling our choices means being able to develop our character, courage, integrity etc., who we are and what we want to become. The rest is a matter of managing the results of our choices.
In addition, we can't really control people, most of our time is spent living and working with people who cannot be controlled. the whole scenario makes for a quite a challenging experience in the game of life. So, the point of the matter becomes one of cause and effect. Every action has it's equal, or opposite.
